Capitol Hill Police ‘Football Tackled’ Hip Hop Activist Rev. Lennox Yearwood at Petreus Hearing
UPDATE: I am told that they are planning to charge him with attacking an officer. Please see the video for yourself. He is in the hospital recovering. I will keep you posted on details as they develop.
WASHINGTON - September 10 - Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., president of the Hip Hop Caucus, was attacked by six capitol police today, when he was stopped from entering the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill, where General Petreaus gave testimony today to a joint hearing for the House Arms Services Committee and Foreign Relations Committee on the war in Iraq.
After waiting in line throughout the morning for the hearing that was scheduled to start at 12:30pm, Rev. Yearwood was stopped from entering the room, while others behind him were allowed to enter. He told the officers blocking his ability to enter the room, that he was waiting in line with everyone else and had the right to enter as well. When they threatened him with arrest he responded with “I will not be arrested today.” According to witnesses, six capitol police, without warning, “football tackled” him. He was carried off in a wheel chair by DC Fire and Emergency to George Washington Hospital.
Rev. Yearwood said as he was being released from the hospital to be taken to central booking, “The officers decided I was not going to get in Gen. Petreaus’ hearing when they saw my button, which says ‘I LOVE THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ.’”
Capitol Police are not saying what the charges are, but an inside source has said that the charge is assaulting a police officer. Rev. Yearwood is scheduled to be transferred to Central Processing to be arraigned tomorrow morning.

I found you because you showed that minister being arrested by cops at the capital…and that was a good thing you did posting it. But you don’t seem to understand the game yet…after all…we are dealing with the rich who have “think tanks” and don’t have to work for bread…they have more time to “trick”.

As for the confrontation itself, completely over the top. Law enforcement cannot get it through their thick skulls that peaceful dissent is as much a constitutional guarantee as gun rights, in fact even more so since you don’t have to perform mental gymnastics to justify it.

It looks to me like tried to move back in the direction of the chamber, tripped, fell into a cop, and the rest of the cops thought he was tackling him and followed suit. Still doesn’t explain why he was refused access in the first place, of course.

I don’t believe he was trying to enter the chamber, but walk away when the first officer grabbed his shoulder, and the others followed suit. Regardless, it did not require the action of 5 or six officers.

The officers clearly decided to take HIM DOWN and there is certainly no evidence of resistance in this video. What was happening before they approached him? Does anyone have that piece videoed?

Rev. Yearwood in no way conducted himself as a nigger, from the videos I saw. However, you sir, fit the description of nigger in examples 2 and 3 quite clearly.
Why focus the spotlight on yourself when you obviously don’t fit in with society?
While I would not have tried to attend this hearing with the button the Reverend wore, there is no reason he should have been singled out. His reaction “why am I being singled out?” is probably what most of us would have said.

There are so many complaints of bad White House police behavior today. This in our long history has never happened until the Nazis were in power in America.
Who ever those police were they should be put on suspension and the case investigated by Congress. The over use of force should not be tolerated in the Capital of a democracy.
Those people attacked and beaten should sue Bush personally since he is responsible for such use of force. Why should we tax payers keep paying for their mistakes and tyranny.

the rev should have just done what was told and dealt with the ” getting in ” issue another day. He clearly was defiant with the officers by shrugging them ( dont touch me

“A place like that” is the halls of Congress, which belongs to the American citizenry. The Reverend waited in line to attend that PUBLIC hearing with everyone else but, when it was his turn to enter, he was turned away. Of course, I wouldn’t expect someone as out of touch with reality as you are to understand our basic freedoms.
Why do I accuse you of being out of touch? Because, your comments reveal that you have no idea who Reverend Yearwood is. He does not need to seek fame, because he has already achieved it. He is not a “hip hip” artist; he gave that name to his caucus because he wanted to get more young people engaged in the political process.
“All the revs” you know would not act like that? How many “revs” do you know? Do you know any who have been compared to the Reverend Martin Luther King, who have worked to achieve a great goal through non-violent action, as has Reverend Yearwood? Do you know any “revs” who’ve worked tirelessly to help the poor and forgotten victims of Hurricane Katrina? Reverend Yearwood has done so.
I’m really curious as to what led you to read this story in the first place, and did your initial reaction to a reverend being assaulted change when you saw the reverend was black? You clearly did not watch the same tape I did. I saw a well-known peace activist, wearing an “I Love The People Of Iraq” button, denied entry to “that place” to which he had every right to enter. I saw those who questioned his arrest being subjected to arrest themselves. If that kind of America is okay with you, I’d like to know what our soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all the soldiers who’ve died in wars throughout our nation’s history are dying for. We are told that they have died to keep us free. If freedom is what was witnessed in the halls of Congress yesterday, I’d say those soldiers died in vain.

You may have heard of Channon Christian and Christopher Newome, they were two kids who were (both) raped,kidnapped,and murdered by 4 black males. Bleach was poured down her throat to destroy evidence before she was murdered. Why is it that this crime doesn’t make national news? Granted, every nutjob jewish conspiracy theorist came out of the woodwork to propagandize this case. I am not one of those people. I do find it hard to believe that this story doesn’t make it into national coverage. I have omitted the more grotesque portions of the story, if you can imagine that.
