Richard to Thomas: “man-up” to Arpaio

Speaking with Gerald Richard’s campaign earlier on this whole Sheriff Joe, Andrew Thomas versus the media matter. This is what I was told:

Gerald Richard believes Andrew Thomas is violating his oath of office by encouraging and participating in a full-scale assault on the first amendment rights of the Arizona media and the public’s right to know.

Some background for my out of state readers:

Through a special prosecutor he appointed, Thomas authorized the arrests of the publisher and the owner of the New Times because of stories critical of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  Thomas claimed the two men violated state law by publishing Arpaio’s home address in the on-line versions of the stories, even though that address is publicly available through a number of other websites.  Thomas also sought notes, e-mails and other research related to the stories, plus detailed information on everyone who had visited the New Times website over the past four years.  The newspaper called it “a breathtaking abuse of the U.S. Constitution.” Such actions by the County’s top prosecutor should send a chill down the spine of freedom-loving people everywhere.

House floor action on FY08 Iraq Supplemental Funding Bill scheduled for week of April 14-18

The House Democratic Leadership has announced they intend the House debate and vote upon Bush’s request for at least an additional $100 billion for Iraq military operations during the week of April 14th.  When the Leadership staff was asked if they would allow amendments, including one based on H.R. 5507 that would fence the $ so it could only be used to pay for fully-funded redeployment of all U.S. troops and military contractors within 1 year of enactment, they said the House Democratic Leadership “has no policy as of now.”

Presidential Candidates on Trade

Americas Program, Center for International Policy (CIP)

There is little difference between Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama on international trade issues, although neither has provided much detail and both have shown some ambivalence in their views.

Both candidates have said that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is “flawed” and that it “lacks labor standards and environmental standards” and that it has hurt the United States. Obama states that the agreement has “helped Wall Street but hurt Main Street” and Clinton asserts that we need to do more to “protect our workers.”

Both candidates believe NAFTA should be renegotiated, in Clinton’s words “on terms favorable to all of America.” The candidates cite the negative impact of NAFTA on labor and believe that the agreement must be amended to discourage factory closures and include more retraining and transition programs. The senators often cite the thousands of jobs that have been lost in the United States due to NAFTA, especially when campaigning in the states that have been hardest hit by the agreement, notably Ohio and Pennsylvania. Progressive Caucus Leaders Introduce Legislation to Block Bush End-Run on Permanent U.S. Bases in Iraq and Reassert Co-Equal Constitutional Powers in Foreign Policy

U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey, Co-Chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) and other CPC Members, including U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, Chair of the Out of Iraq Caucus, have introduced new Iraq-related legislation to reassert the constitutional powers of Congress in the shaping and conduct of U.S. foreign policy.  The Foreign Commitments, Congressional Powers, and Status of Forces Resolution will also enable the U.S. House of Representatives to make crystal clear that President Bush cannot skirt the Congress and commit U.S. troops to permanent or enduring U.S. bases inside Iraq or any other country by any other means than a treaty, statute, or concurrent resolution of both Houses of Congress specifically providing for such a foreign commitment. (See copy here.)

“The Bush administration cannot unilaterally establish a long term military presence in Iraq, tying the hands of future presidents, without Congressional approval,” Congresswoman Lee declared.  Continue reading →
