A Win For Roosevelt Students Today!
July 31st, 2008 — Education, AZ Politics
Today, the Arizona State Board of Education met to decide officially whether to take over control of the Roosevelt School District. Tom Horne, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, urged for a vote to relieve the democratically elected school board of its local authority to guide the District. Horne advocated for the Arizona State Department of Education to step in and manage the Roosevelt School District directly. However, after reviewing the recent AIMS results, it became clear that the Roosevelt School District has shown tremendous improvement under its own local control, and doesn’t need the State’s direct guidance at this time.
Roosevelt Elementary School District’s Superintendent, Dr. Mark Dowling, credits strong community investment and high professional commitment from the educators for improving the academic results within his district. Continue reading →
Podcasting Tonight’s County Attorney Debate
July 29th, 2008 — Immigration, 2008 Battle, The Dems, AZ Politics
My intent is to podcast the County Attorney Debate tonight live at Central High School. Depending on the setup, internet availability, and additional issues that might come up… I might just have to record it and upload it for later tonight. Nonetheless, check here at 7pm AZ time to see if I was successful in the live webcast.
[update… this will be live… but school does NOT have internet. Thus I am doing this EDVO style (cell phone broadcast)]
The White House is busted
July 26th, 2008 — The Repugs
Ex-White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan exposed Fox News as a propaganda tool for the White House on Chris Mathews Hardball.
Fox in the White House: It is one of those things you kind of assume to be true all along… and yet are shocked when hard confirmation actually comes. Our fourth story tonight, from the former White House press secretary himself, word that the Bush White House routinely sent–and as far as we know, still sends– literal talking points to Fox News for its primetime propagandists, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and others… to spout, as if ventriloquist dummies, as if they had thought of it themselves, as if they had come to those opinions independently, as if there had been a process either fair… or balanced.

Vote or Die 2? A New 2008 Hip Hop GOTV Campaign
July 23rd, 2008 — Youth Organizing, Hip-Hop, The Movement, 2008 Battle
The Hip Hop Caucus and T.I. have joined forces to launch a voter registration and “Get Out the Vote” campaign that combines the power of celebrity and media with 21st century grassroots organizing tactics targeting adult between the ages 18 – 29 to vote in the upcoming Presidential election.
Many folks in 2004 felt the “Vote or Die” campaign was a little disorganized and at the end of the day… ineffective. But I have seen what Rev. Yearwood has done since then to sustain that growth. The question is, will the lessons learned be applied by the community itself. What are your thoughts? Below I started a Seesmic thread on this. Sorry for the loud background noise… I am in a coffee shop. I would love your video response. What are your thoughts?

Sheriff Arpaio Sued Over Racial Profiling Of Latinos In Maricopa County
July 16th, 2008 — ACLU of AZ
Today, five individuals and Somos America, a Latino community-based coalition, sued Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office (MCSO) and Maricopa County, charging that they or their members were unlawfully stopped and mistreated by law enforcement because they are Latino. The class action lawsuit - which builds upon a complaint filed last December - is before the U.S. District Court in Arizona.
The amended complaint was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Arizona, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and lead counsel Steptoe & Johnson LLP. The lawsuit charges that the policies and practices of Arpaio and the county are discriminatory and unlawfully violate the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Arizona Constitution.
